Hotmail Officially Dead, Outlook.com To Get Enhanced

Microsoft's erstwhile Hotmail.com is officially killed, and users will no longer be able to access even the interface of the company's once popular email, as Microsoft has said that it had ported all remaining users to its replacement, the Outlook.com email service. This required migrating 150 petabytes of datain 6 weeks, explains an infographic. Now Outlook.com's user base is said to have crossed the 400 million mark. The standout features of Outlook.com, as cited by Brian Hall of Outlook.com, in an earlier interview with Techtree, were Outlook.com's ability to work intuitively even on mobile devices (tablets, and mobile phones alike). Microsoft has also been introducing various enhancements to its Outlook.com email service, as of late.

Along with this, Microsoft also announced the integration of a couple of features namely Improved SkyDrive integration and SMTP send. With SMTP send, you can send emails form the SMTP server of your other email account. This feature enhances Outlook.com's "reply on behalf of" enhancement. For instance, you switched from Gmail and are still using that Gmail address when replying to folks, your recipients would see the email sent on behalf of other accounts. Now SMTP send makes it possible for you to send emails from a different account via the SMTP server of that account. To access this feature, you can check out the Options Menu, and then click More mail settings, select Your email accounts, and then navigate to the Add an email account section.

With the Redmond-based company set to include a better SkyDrive integration within Outlook.com, users will be able to compose emails, along with select SkyDrive images, directly from SkyDrive. With SkyDrive integration, users would see a new Compose feature altogether.

Both these enhancements have started rolling out, and users throughout the world must get them in a couple of weeks from now. With these integrations in tow, do you think Microsoft's Outlook.com is an able replacement of Hotmail, which was one of the first to offer free email services
