2013/14 The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarships for Indians

The Government of Japan is offering full-fledged scholarships (tuition fees, travel expenses, health insurance and living expenses) to the Indian students to enable them to pursue their higher studies (Bachelors/Masters/PhD) in Japan. These scholarships can be used to study various bachelor/masters courses in this East Asian country.

All application procedures for these scholarships are conducted through Japanese embassies and consulates which are located in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore.

The Japanese Government is offering the following four categories of scholarships for Indian students as given below:

1) Monbukagakusho:MEXT Master/Research Scholarships : These scholarships can be used to study a master/PhD course for two years in Japan.

Fields of study: Information Technology/ Optical Fibre Communication; Quality and Reliability Engineering; Electrical Engineering/Electronics & Communication; Mechanical Engineering /Robotics; Laser Technology; Bio-technology; Japanese Language and Literature; Fisheries; Japanese Studies; Earthquake Engineering; Environmental Science; Civil Engineering/Architecture; Aero-space Engineering; Materials Science/Engineering.

Who can apply: Any graduate or post graduate in the relevant field

Amount of Scholarship: Full Tuition fees + 143,000-145,000 Yen/ month for living expenses (Approx. Rs. 77,000-78,000 per month for the year 2013 *3) + Round-trip airfare

2) Studying in Japan Japanese Government Undergraduate College of Technology Scholarships: These scholarships can be used to study a undergraduate course leading to a Bachelors degree in Engineering.

However it will take you five years from April to complete a Bachelor's degree because you will be trained in Japanese for one year.

Fields of study: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Information, Communication & Network Engineering, Material Engineering, Architecture and Civil Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Other Fields.

Who can apply: Students who have academic ability equal to that of a high school graduate (From 17 to 21 years that is having their date of birth between April 2, 1992 and April 1, 1997).

Amount of Scholarship: Full tuition fees + 117,000 Yen/month for living expenses (Approx. Rs. 62,000 per month for the year 2013 *1) + Round-trip airfare.

b) Agricultural Studies, Hygienic Studies, Biology

c) Medicine, Dentistry

Who can apply: Students who have academic ability equal to that of a high school graduate (From 17 to 21 years that is having their date of birth between April 2, 1992 and April 1, 1997).

Amount of Scholarship: Full tuition fees + 117,000 Yen/month for living expenses (Approx. Rs. 62,000 per month for the year 2013 *2) + Round-trip airfare.

And once again will take you three years from April to complete a Bachelor's degree because you will be trained in Japanese for one year.

Fields of study: Personal Care and Nutrition, Education and Welfare , Business, Fashion and Home Economics, Cultural and General Education, Music, Arts, Other Fields

Who can apply: Students who have academic ability equal to that of a high school graduate (From 17 to 21 years that is having their date of birth between April 2, 1992 and April 1, 1997).

Amount of Scholarship: Full tuition fees + 117,000 Yen/month for living expenses (Approx. Rs. 62,000 per month for the year 2013 *1) + Round-trip airfare.
