Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a scholarship program funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, aimed at encouraging students to take up research careers in the areas of basic sciences. It offers scholarships and contingency grants (from Rs. 5000 per month to Rs. 7000) up to the pre-Ph.D. level to selected students. Started in 1999, it is administered by the Indian Institute of Science.

Who can apply: 

The KVPY Fellowships are given only to Indian Nationals to study in India.

Now these scholarships can be categorized in these three streams:

Stream SA: Students enrolled in XI Standard (Science Subjects) during the academic year 2013-14 and having secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board examination. The students under this stream will be mentored for one year. Their fellowship will be activated when they enrol in an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) after XII Standard(+2) securing a minimum of 60% (50%for SC/ST/PWD) mark or equivalent grade. During the mentoring period of one year, they will be invited for Regional Science Camp/National Science Camp and expenses for attending those camps will be met by KVPY.

Stream SX: Students enrolled in XII Standard/ (+2) (Science subjects) during the academic year 2013–14 and aspiring to join an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. for the session 2014–15 provided they have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the X Standard Board Examination. They must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

Students in their 2nd year of study in Cambridge International Examination Board and aspiring to join an UG program (viz. B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.)in Basic Sciences namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology in the Academic year 2014-2015 are eligible to apply provided they have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the X Standard Board Examination. They must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

Stream SB: Students enrolled in the 1st year of undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to BSc/BS/B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./MS during the academic year 2013–14 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Mathematics) in the XII Standard Board Examination. In the 1st year final examination of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./M.S. they must secure 60%(50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

Note: KVPY does not allow its Fellows to receive simultaneously fellowship /scholarship from more than one source, either government or private. In case they are in receipt of any other fellowship or scholarship, they will have to relinquish it in order to avail the KVPY Fellowship.

What you would getting: Monthly Fellowship + Annual Contingency Grant etc.

Monthly Fellowships: Under this scheme, you get Rs. 5000 per month during 1st to 3rd years of - BSc/BS/B.Stat./B.Math./ Integrated c/MS and Rs. 7000 per month during MSc./4th to 5th years of Integrated MSc./MS

Annual Contingency Grant: Apart from these monthly fellowships, you get an annual contingency grant of Rs. 20000 and Rs. 28000 per year during 1st to 3rd years of - BSc/BS/B.Stat./B.Math./ Integrated MSc/MS and MSc./4th to 5th years of Integrated MSc./MS respectively.

Summer program: KVPY Fellows spend one or two weeks in scientific institutions listening to lectures by experts in different fields of Basic Sciences and other related subjects, see things in a research environment, science in action, watch scientists at work, interact with scientists, visit nearby scientific research laboratories and institutions, exchange views and interact with other research students. Sometimes Fellows with specific interest are associated with individual scientists who talk to them about their interest, help them clear their doubts, give them problem to work on, let themdo experiments, and tell them about the future scope in the area of their interest.

The Summer Program for the KVPY Fellows is arranged at the Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER) - Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal, and Trivandrum for a week.

Other Privileges: Each KVPY Fellow will be issued an Identity Card so as to have access to National Laboratories/Universities who have agreed to extend special privileges like library, laboratory facilities, etc. to KVPY Fellows on production of the ID card.

How to apply: There are two ways to apply, online and offline but you should apply online. Please note you need to pay them a processing fee of Rs. 500 whether you apply online or offline.

But the Processing fee is exempted for the following categories of students:
• Students belonging to SC/ST community
• Students With Disability (Physically and Visually Challenged Students)

1. Online: For Online application forms, visit the KVPY website. Those who are unable to apply online may request for a hard Copy.

And after you apply online, you need to mail them your completed application form along with the following documents, superscribing on the envelope the stream applied to the KVPY office in Bangalore latest by September 2, 2013.

• Caste certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed proforma in the case of SC/ST students.
• Medical certificate from the prescribed authority in case of Persons With Disability (physically and visually challenged students) certifying the percentage of disability.
• Copy of the marks/grade statement of the previous qualifying examination(s).
• The original Pay-in-slip of Rs. 500/- if applicable.

2. Offline: Those who are unable to apply online may request for a hard Copy.

A hard copy of the application form can be obtained from KVPY on request on a plain paper enclosing the paid “Bank Challan/ Pay-in-slip” (available at: http://www.kvpy.org.in/), clearly indicating the stream SA/SX/SB on the envelope.

Application Fees: An application fee of Rs. 500/- may be remitted at any core banking branch of the STATE BANK OF INDIA to the credit of “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) A/c. No. 10270577392”

Selection Procedure:

1. Aptitude Test: After scrutiny of application forms and meeting the eligibility criteria for various streams, all eligible students will be called for a written aptitude test conducted both in Hindi and English at different centers across the country on Sunday, the 27th October 2013. The details of the venue of the aptitude test for the eligible students and their seat number will be published in the KVPY website during the first week of October 2013.

Admit Card
• Students who have applied online may download the admit card for the aptitude test from the website from the second week of October 2013.
• For students who have applied with a hard copy, admit card will be sent by speed post.

2. Interview: Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students will be asked to appear for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure.
